As we operate in the Tainui area this is the kawa (rules) that we practice in our centre. M\u0101ori language is valued and encouraged in karakia (prayer), waiata (song) and kapa haka (action songs) and spoken M\u0101ori is interspersed with English during play. Grace before meals is sung in M\u0101ori. We follow spiritual rules of tapu (sacred) and noa (everyday ordinary) through the separation of food and body linen. Specific tables are kept for kai (food) only. Tuakana\/ Teina (older children supporting younger children) is also encouraged as much as possible. Teachers in our Hamilton nursery and daycare have the same level of certification as those in community kindergartens and are intentional in the way they recognise and respond to opportunities to extend children\u2019s learning. Teaching practice incorporates the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.<\/p>\n Each child has an online portfolio (Storypark) containing photos of and stories explaining some of their learning from the view of a teacher.
